Gjalt nasceu na Holanda e Corinna no Reino Unido. Chegaram ao Faial pela primeira vez em 2007 e ficaram fascinados. Tendo em conta que a questão profissional ainda era uma constante nas suas vidas, só em 2012 aportaram definitivamente a esta ilha, que consideram ser um paraíso.

Depois de terem viajado por todo o mundo, renderam-se à tranquilidade e beleza do Capelo, freguesia onde têm casa.

Mantendo um ritual habitual na sua vida, logo que chegou, Gjalt procurou o Clube Naval da Horta, onde fez amigos, sendo praticante de Vela, Apneia e Canoagem.

1.Há quanto tempo frequenta o Clube Naval da Horta?
Chegámos à Horta no nosso barco (“Synergy”) em 2007, depois de ter navegado ao redor do mundo. O nosso último porto foi a Ilha de Ascensão e levámos 29 dias até aportar na Horta. Nessa manhã, quando chegámos ao Faial, vimos a ilha pela primeira vez, que se apresentava fantasticamente bela e decidimos que queríamos viver aqui. Não nos tornámos logo membros do Clube Naval, uma vez que tivemos de voltar ao trabalho. Quando regressámos em 2012, aí sim tivemos tempo de apreciar a ilha de forma total.

2.Por que gosta do Clube Naval?
Fui membro de vários clubes de Vela em todo o mundo e por várias razões gosto muito mais do Clube Naval da Horta. Em primeiro lugar, por causa das pessoas que são todas muito prestáveis e onde já fiz bons amigos. Estou muito impressionado com a quantidade de actividades que o Clube Naval organiza e a forma como o faz. Nesse sentido, este ano destaco a Regata Atlantis Cup, a Semana do Mar, as Regatas de Vela de Cruzeiro aos fins-de-semana, as Regatas de Botes Baleeiros assim como o Campeonato Nacional de Access, que foi muito bem organizado. Também estou muito impressionado com a Vela Ligeira e a Canoagem, direccionada para crianças e adolescentes.

O que eu não percebo é por que razão a Vela Ligeira é restrita a crianças e adolescentes. Gostava que houvesse Vela Ligeira para Adultos, pois em todos os outros clubes de Vela de que fui membro, havia sempre um núcleo de adultos com os seus próprios barcos, que velejavam duas ou três vezes por semana e, que, no fim tomavam uma bebida ou faziam um churrasco. O que pode ser mais relaxante do que isto? E devo sublinhar que as condições para fazer isso aqui são incríveis ao longo de todo o ano.

3.Como descobriu o Clube Naval?
O Clube de Vela é sempre uma das primeiras coisas que eu procuro num lugar novo, mas aqui nem foi preciso procurar, porque é impossível não nos apercebermos da sua existência!

4.Por que razão decidiu frequentar as Aulas de Vela para Adultos do CNH?
Comprei o meu próprio Laser, porque não queria perder a oportunidade de fazer Vela aqui. É tão bonito na água! Às vezes, quando surfo uma onda, vejo pássaros e golfinhos em torno de mim, com a ilha do Pico ao fundo, e sinto-me tão feliz que me apetece cantar (é claro que não o faço por soar horrível e porque poderia interferir com a natureza!). Com as aulas de Vela tenho oportunidade de melhorar. O Duarte Araújo e o José Miguel Barros são muito bons treinadores e há sempre coisas novas para aprender. O Laser não é um barco difícil, mas é difícil velejar e manuseá-lo bem. Para mim, este tipo de vela está no cerne de todas as habilidades de navegação. Tudo é importante num Laser e o barco oferece retorno imediato sobre o que se faz certo ou errado, sobretudo no último caso!

Quando navego no meu “Synergy”, faço-o melhor quando este Admiral’s Cupper (modelo de iate) de 49 pés começa a comportar-se como um Laser.

O Laser também exige que o velejador seja forte, apto e flexível, o que proporciona uma grande motivação para a pessoa se manter saudável.

5.Tem outros amigos estrangeiros que também frequentem as Aulas de Vela para Adultos?
Tanto os amigos locais como os estrangeiros reúnem-se de vez em quando mas, infelizmente, ainda não foram capazes de estabelecer um núcleo dedicado à Vela. Espero que isso aconteça e que mais pessoas comprem o seu próprio barco, que não tem de ser um Laser. Penso que outra belíssima classe de Vela Ligeira para as condições que existem no Faial, seria a classe “Fireball”.

6.O que é que aprendeu?
Estou a aprender muitas coisas, mas um bom exemplo seria fazer vela no sentido do vento (“sailing on dead run”). Isso é muito difícil de fazer num Laser, especialmente com ventos fortes e ondas grandes, que com um pequeno erro ou um lapso de concentração fará com que a embarcação revire. É algo muito excitante, mas agora já estou muito melhor neste aspecto, embora ainda cometa erros!

7.Acha que estas Aulas devem continuar?
Espero que sim. E espero que mais pessoas se juntem a nós, de preferência com os seus próprios barcos. É claro que eu não posso esperar que o Duarte e o José dêem aulas só para mim, por isso tenho-me juntado aos mais novos. Vou continuar a praticar, pois é demasiado bom para perder. Juntem-se a nós e vão ver como é bom!

8.Acha importante o trabalho que o Clube Naval faz?
Muito importante! É a base e o centro de todos os desportos náuticos na ilha, tanto na vertente recreativa como competitiva. Como tal, o Clube Naval da Horta proporciona a coesão social, uma parte essencial da educação e formação dos mais novos e também constitui um meio para os adultos se manterem em forma e serem pessoas saudáveis e felizes.

O CNH preserva o património histórico-cultural através da Secção de Botes Baleeiros, além de oferecer oportunidades para pessoas com deficiência fazerem Vela. E é preciso salientar que o Clube Naval da Horta esteve na base da formação do Campeão de Portugal na Vela (Classe Laser Standard) que é o atleta Rui Silveira!

Faço ainda parte da Secção de Apneia do Clube Naval, de onde também já saíram campeões a nível nacional. Os treinos em Apneia são essenciais para a segurança de quem faz caça submarina.

Recentemente, também comecei a praticar Canoagem. É verdade que ainda vou um bocadinho trémulo, mas divirto-me imenso.

9.Onde nasceu e o que fazia profissionalmente?
Nasci na Holanda e a minha esposa, Corinna, no Reino Unido. Éramos ambos físicos na Indústria de Petróleo e Gás. Devido ao nosso trabalho, vivemos em muitos países diferentes e tivemos sempre de viajar muito.

10.Por que escolheu viver na ilha do Faial? Gosta de viver cá?
Vivemos aqui porque amamos isto! Amamos a ilha, o mar, as pessoas, os nossos amigos e todas as coisas que podemos fazer aqui. Estivemos em todo o mundo e o facto de termos escolhido o Faial para nos instalarmos, significa que ele nos diz muito. Quem nasceu aqui deve considerar-se muito afortunado. Nós demorámos muito tempo a encontrar este sítio.

11.Na sua opinião, o que falta ao Faial? E ao Clube Naval?
Tal como referi acima, estou à espera que apareça um grupo de marinheiros adultos, com barco próprio, para fazermos umas corridas semanais, tomarmos umas bebidas e fazermos uns churrascos. Quanto ao resto, que continuem o bom trabalho! Neste caso, sou eu quem tem de mudar, melhorando o meu Português. Lamento muito não poder responder a esta entrevista em português.

Gjalt Van der Zee praises the extensive activity and dynamics of the Clube Naval da Horta

Gjalt was born in Holand, and Corinna in the UK. This couple first visited Faial back in 2007, and they were fascinated with the island. Given that they were still professionally bounded, they only moved to Faial in 2012, an island witch they consider a paradise. And after having traveled all over the world, they surrendered to the tranquility and beauty of the area of Capelo, a township where they found their home.

As soon as he arrived, and keeping with the regular ritual in his life, Gjalt searched for the Naval Club of Horta, a place where he made friends, and were today he is a practitioner of Vela, Canoeing and Apnea.

1.How long have you been a member of Clube Naval da Horta?
We arrived in Horta in 2007 on our boat, (“Synergy”) after sailing around the world. Our last port was Ascension Island and it took us 29 days to sail to Faial. When we arrived in the morning, we saw the fantastically beautiful island of Faial for the first time, and we decided right there in that moment, that we wanted to live here. That time, we did not become members of Clube Naval, as we did not stay because we had to return to work. We were only able to truly appreciate the island when we returned in 2012.

2.Why do you like the Clube Naval da Horta?
I have been a member of several sailing clubs around the world, and for many reasons I like Clube Naval more than all the others. Firstly because of the people, who are all very helpful, as such I have made there many good friends. I am very impressed by the amount of activities that Clube Naval organizes, and how well it organizes them. For me, some of the highlights of this year were the Atlantis Cup, the Semana do Mar, the weekend Yacht races, the Whale Boat sailing, as well as the Access to the National Sailing Championship that was very well organized. I am also very impressed by the dinghy sailing and kayaking for children and teenagers.

What I don’t understand is that dinghy sailing seems restricted to children and teenagers. In all the other sailing clubs I have been a member of, the core always consisted of a group of adults with their own dinghies, who would race once or twice a week, and have a drink or a BBQ afterwards. What can be more relaxing than that? The conditions for doing this here, are incredible all the year around.

3.How did you find the Clube Naval?
The sailing club is always one of the first things I look for, in a new place, but here I didn’t have to look for it. It is impossible not to notice it!

4.Why do you attend the Sailing Lessons for Adults?
I bought my own Laser because I didn’t want to miss out on the opportunity to dinghy sail here. It is so beautiful out there on the water. Sometimes when I surf off a wave, birds and dolphins around me, Pico in the background, I get so happy I want to sing (I don’t because I sound awful and it could ruin the atmosphere!). With the Sailing Lessons I get the opportunity to improve. Duarte and Jose are very good coaches, and there are always new things to learn. The Laser dingy is not a difficult boat to sail, but it is difficult to sail in it well. To me, this kind of sailing lies at the heart of all sailing skills. Everything is important in a Laser and the boat gives you immediate and clear feedback on what you do right or wrong, especially in the latter!

When I sail on “Synergy”, I do it best when this 49ft Admiral’s Cupper starts to feel like a Laser to me. The Laser also requires you to be strong, fit and flexible, which provides a great motivation to stay healthy.

5.Do foreign friends of yours, also attend the Sailing Lessons for Adults?
Both local and foreign friends are joining the classes every now and then, but unfortunately we have not yet been able to establish a dedicated core of dinghy sailors. I hope this will happen, and that more people will buy their own dinghy, and it doesn’t have to be a Laser. I think a Fireball would also be a great class for the sailing conditions here.

6.What have you learned?
I am learning many things, but a good example would be sailing on a dead run. This is quite difficult in a Laser, especially in strong winds and big waves, and a small mistake or a lapse in concentration will cause capsize. This is very exciting stuff and I am now much better at it. Of course I still make mistakes!

7.Do you think that these classes should continue?
I really hope they will, and that more people will join, hopefully with their own boats. Of course I cannot expect Duarte and Jose to do this just for me, so I will join the teenagers for the time being. I will keep doing it as I think dinghy sailing here, is just too good to miss. Come and join us and you will see!

8.Do you find the work that Clube Naval does, is important?
Very important! It is the basis and centre of all watersports on the island, both recreationally and competitively, all in one club. As such, it provides a lot of social cohesion, an essential part in the upbringing and education of children. And a way for adults to stay fit, healthy and happy. It protects the cultural heritage through the Whale Boat sailing, and it provides sailing opportunities for people with a handicap. And let’s not forget that Clube Naval has produced a Portugal’s Laser Sailing Champion in Rui Silveira!

I am also part of Clube Naval’s Apnea Team, which too has produced Portuguese Champions and which is also essential as safety training for spearfishing, and I recently started kayaking as well. Wobbly, but great fun.

9.Where were you born? What was your job?
I was born in Holland, and my wife Corinna, is from the UK. We are both physicists who worked in the Oil and Gas Industry. For our work, we lived in many different countries and always had to travel a lot.

10. Why did you choose to live on Faial? Why do you like to live here?
We live here because we love it here! We love the island, the ocean, the people, our friends, and all the things we can do here. We have been all over the world, so the fact that we chose Faial as a place to settle should tell you something. If you were born here you should consider yourself very lucky. It took us a long time to find you!

Corinna and I live in Capelo together. A cat has joined us.

11. In your opinion, what is missing to Faial, and also at the Clube Naval?
As I said above, I am hoping for a group of adult dinghy sailors with weekly races, drinks and barbecues. As for everything else, keep going! It is me who has to change by improving my Portuguese. I am very sorry I couldn’t write this in Portuguese.
